provenance
Acquired privately from finder, January 2008
~ Found by I Carruthers near Corfe Castle (Dorset), 2002 ~
[EMC 2003.0003 = BNJ Coin Register 2003, no. 125]

This is a simplified and less decorated version of the type represented by finds from near Canterbury and Tilbury (Metcalf, Thrymsas and Sceattas, III. pp. 531). The find distribution, with this piece and another from Domburg, suggests they originate from south eastern England, not East Anglia as previously thought. This coin has a duplicate listing on EMC (2009.0069), but the 2003 Coin Register confirms the earlier and presumed more accurate provenance.
