1896 (8 Jan.) incoming stampless envelope with printed "Imperial Japanese Post Office Shanghai Official Business" to Nanking bearing, on the reverse, a good strike of the Shanghai Local Post c.d.s. in blue; the address side bearing a fine strike of the "nanking local post" dated oval (10.1) in purple. A delightful cover and a very important example of the pre-adhesive mail. This is the earliest such example, possibly used on the opening day of this Local Post Office (only recorded as opened in January 1896)
