(x) U.S.A.: Mergenthaler Linotype Co. New York, $100 shares, 18[96], #113, issued to William C. Whitney and signed by him on the reverse. Vignette of linotype typesetting machine top right, green and black, cancelled. William Collins Whitney (1841-1904), politician, financier and racehorse owner, served as Secretary of the Navy, 1885-1889. Opposed the Tweed ring. Helped form the New York Loan and Improvement which developed Washington Heights. Organised with his brother the Dominion Coal Company and Dominion Iron and Steel Company to exploit resources on Cape Breton Island in Canada. The Mergenthaler linotype machine was the most successful invention to replace the time consuming process of laying type by hand. Through a series of acquisitions and mergers it is now part of Heidelberger. VF.
