(x) U.S.A.: Custom House, Collectors' Office, Drawback certificate, 186[7], for $[50], #5330, for 'Tin plates', in favour of Charles Pratt, who signs his acceptance on the reverse. Underprint 'Domestic Manufactures', orange and black, cancelled. These certificates were issued to enable the importer to reclaim the amount from the revenue office. Charles Pratt was a pioneer of the petroleum industry, founding his kerosene refinery in Brooklyn in the 1860's. He met his future partner Henry H. Rogers in the early 60's but they were soon to be challenged by Rockefeller and Standard Oil. Despite several clashes Standard Oil absorbed Pratt & Company in 1874 with both Pratt and Rogers being included in Rockefeller's inner circle.
