(x) U.S.A.: Standard Oil Trust, certificate for [1000] shares, 5th April 188[2], #335, issued to Henry L. Davis and signed by him on the reverse and also on the counterfoil. Signed by John D. Rockefeller as President and J. D. Archbold as Assistant Secretary. State capitol at top, green and black. Archbold (1848-1916), was a small oil operator in Pennsylvania who was bought out by Standard Oil. He was later recruited into the company and soon rose to become one of Rockefeller's right hand men virtually running the company while Rockefeller was handling his philanthropic projects. On the break up of the Trust into smaller companies in 1911 Archbold became president of the largest - Standard Oil of New Jersey - until his death in 1916. Cancelled and counterfoil reglued at left.
