Auction: 20128 - Bonds and Share Certificates of the World e-Auction

Great Britain: London, Chatham & Dover Railway Company, an interesting pair of certificates for £10 preferred shares 'B' City Lines, 1864, one issued to Sir Samuel Morton Peto and the other to Edward Ladd Betts, both partners in the Railway contractors Peto & Betts. Both printed in black by Waterlow & Sons, one with printed 'No.' the other without. Peto & Betts were formed in the 1840's and one of the largest railway contractors at the time. They were brought down by the failure of their bankers Overend, Gurney & Co. in 1866 and were insolvent by 1867 leaving 20,000 workers unemployed. Both EF (2).
