George IV (1820-30), the [cancelled] visit to Southampton, AE Medal, 1823, by William Wyon, signed W. WYON. SC: R: M:, laureate head left, rev. naval crown within a wreath, PORTUM SUTHAMPTONIAE INTRAVIT – VOTIS COMMUNITATIS, 53mm, 65.08 g (Eimer 1169; BHM 1205; Carlisle p.200), slight abrasions below truncation on obverse, and two small spots on reverse by AM of SOUTHAMPTON and below crown, otherwise extremely fine and very rare

bt. Mrs I. Allen, March 2007
The visit was cancelled due to a combination of the King's health and inclement weather. Carlisle states that the Mayor and Corporation sent a gold medal to the King and that it was 'most graciously received', though its whereabouts today is not known. The family of Wyon's wife, Catherine Sophia née Keele, to whom he had been married for only two years, came from Southampton and this might have provided the medallist with a reason for producing the medal, indeed Carlisle goes on to state that he was made an Honorary Burgess of the town. Carlisle also states that only twenty medals were struck in bronze [copper] and two in silver.
