In correspondence with the present vendor at the time of their purchasing it, the following information was provided:

'The Short cross type is extremely homogeneous, with very few variations known on the basic design. I've recorded just over 1,000 Cnut short cross pennies offered for sale at auction and in fixed price lists over the last 70 years, and only 13 have been any kind of variety.

Most of the varieties of the short cross type that do occur relate to the item that appears in front of the bust of Cnut. Overwhelmingly often he is holding a ceptre, but very rarely he is depicted holding a lance, banner or standard, occasionally in combination with each other.

This coin is of the 'short cross with lance' (North 792). I've recorded only 10 examples ever offer for sale, and only 6 in the modern (post-Lockett 1955-61) era. The type is also known at Lincoln and Winchester. The SCBI database at the Fitzwilliam, Cambridge records over 1,800 Cnut Short cross pennies, of which only 7 are of this variety, with all housed in Copenhagen and attributed to the mint of Winchester.'

Since this time no further examples of the 'Short cross with lance' variety have been recorded on EMC or the PAS Finds Database, more recently however an example for the moneyer Thurstan at Stamford has been offered privated on the London market.
