Kent, Ecgberht (c. 765-780), Penny, Light Coinage, Canterbury, Udd, 1.17g, 4h, +ECGBERHT, the E retrograde, Rx monogram in centre, rev. U:D:D:: in central pelleted cartouche, ornamented cross and pellets above and below, scrolls surround (EMC 2020.0086 this coin; Naismith 87k-m same dies; Williams I, lot 1; SCBI I [Fitzwilliam], 428; BMC I; N.200; S.874), slight soil rub to high points and a trace of porosity, otherwise with some residual tone to reverse, very rare, and an historic coin, amongst the earliest issues of the silver 'Penny' in England, thereby establishing a weight standard and precedent that would last for almost five Centuries
