It has been previously noted that nothing resembling this countermark has recorded amongst the known pseudo-official Spanish countermarks of monograms and eagle heads. This mark has a distinctive Celtic appearance, with the coiled serpent biting its own tail. The Ibero-Celts arrived in Hispania in the 3rd century BC, and formed the basis of most of the tribes that existed in the peninsula when the Romans arrived. This countermark hints that Celtic artistic influence was still felt in Spain in the 1st century AD.
