Roman Republic, L. Roscius Fabatus (64 BC), AR Denarii 'Serratus', 3.90g and 3.95g (2), Juno Sospita right, wearing goat's skin, symbol behind, rev. Female standing right, feeding serpent, symbol behind, fabati in exergue (RSC Roscia 3; Sydenham 915; RRC 412/1), both struck slightly off centre, nonetheless toned and lustrous, the first almost extremely fine, the last very fine (2)

This coin documents the annual festival at Lanuvium in honour of Juno Sospita, in which a virgin would disappear into a grotto inhabited by a serpent. If the girl was found not to be chaste she was destroyed by the serpent.
