(g) AU58 | United States of America, Gold $2½ Dollars 1857-S, Liberty Head Quarter-Eagle, San Francisco, by Christian Gobrecht, edge milled, 6h (Winter dies 1-A; PCGS #7785 [Tied 1 of 20 / 36 Finer]; NGC ID #25WX [Tied 1 of 65 / 20 Finer]), a pleasingly good very fine, but rare in higher grades and from a mintage of only 69,200 pieces, in NGC holder, graded AU58 (Cert. #5878602-002)

David Akers (1975/88) noted the following: 'Similar in mintage and overall rarity to the 1856-S, but scarce as a date and extremely rare in uncirculated. The finest that I have seen was the Gilhousen coin and, except for that piece, I have seen only two other UNCS. and perhaps just five or six others that were even AU. Very underrated and actually much more difficult to obtain in high grade than the higher priced 1857-D.'
