Wessex, Alfred the Great (871-899), Penny, 'London Monogram', type A2, 1.39g, 8h, AELFR-ED REX, diademed bust right with curly hair, wearing compact ornate tunic, curly hair, pellets in fields before, rev. LONDONIA Monogram, three pellets in D, and on outer border, fields plain (Murdoch 77 this coin; Carlyon-Britton [1918], 1652, same dies; Lockett 504, same reverse die; Dolley and Blunt [BNJ, 1958], pp. 220-247; MacKay, London, dies 9 (O4/R9), coin 2; N.644; Spink 1061), very minor edge loss at 12 o'clock, otherwise a most handsome coin, with a remarkably bold portrait in an arrestingly rustic but highly competent style, near extremely fine, very rare and with an excellent pedigree
