1864-79 One Penny Plate Numbers
Plate 116, TE-TF imperforate pair - the "Cardiff Penny" with lower margin, large margins all round and shows part of the margin watermark (reversed) large part original gum with some very minor wrinkling as usual. The lower margin with part of the inscription and just shows the centre sheet cross. An exceptionally fresh and an astonishing pair of this popular variety. S.G. G1g, £20,000

In January 1870, some imperforate sheets were sent in error to Cardiff, and were sold in the usual way. It is thought that all of the unused examples come from these and the variety is known as the "Cardiff Penny". These stamps were printed on the wrong side of the paper and consequently the watermark inscriptions are reversed
