In September 1851 Perkins, Bacon received instructions to engrave one spare plate for each press employed. In June 1850 the first three Reserve Plates were registered. These plates were retained at Somerset House for emergencies. In November 1854, pressure of work saw the request to use six of the reserve plates, R1 to R6
