Auction: 20040 - Stamps and Covers of Southern Africa
Lot: 528
(x) Southern Rhodesia
1964 Definitive Issue
2/6d. ultramarine and vermilion horizontal strip of four, the centre pair variety vermilion omitted, the left-hand stamp with vermilion only on one tail fin and the right-hand stamp with vermilion only lightly inked; superb unmounted mint. A rare and spectacular multiple of this rare variety. Pierron RH204MCa; S.G. 102a, £17,000. Photo
Note: The missing vermilion affects the fish scales, eye, gill, fins and tail. The error occurred on two or three sheets. It’s known columns seven (from the left) and nine were affected, but not if the columns came from the same sheet or two different ones. Columns six and ten show partial omission of the colour, but column eight hasn’t been seen making it impossible to know with certainty if one or two sheets were affected. What is known with certainty is that one other sheet was affected completely on columns six and seven and partially on the columns either side
