Auction: 20030 - The Gary Diffen Collection of Australian Colonies Errors Part 1 - New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia - conducted behind closed doors
Lot: 276

(x) South Australia
1876-1900 Watermark Broad Star
Perf. 11½-12½
9d. rose-lilac printed both sides, the second impression printed sideways, fine used. Three examples recorded and grossly under-catalogued at £600. RPSV Certificate (2013). S.G. 123a. Photo

Note: This error was first reported in the "London Philatelist" in July 1893, however, it was not listed in the Stanley Gibbons catalogue as a generic printed both sides until 1923. The second impression on the reverse of both of these stamps is much lighter than its Large Star watermark counterpart of S.G. 122a. No distinction between the inverted error and the sideways error was made until quite recently. They are both amongst the great errors of South Australia. The last time an example was publically auctioned of either variety was over sixty years ago in the Beresford sale in 1958.
