Lot: 170
(x) Queensland
1862-67 Thick Toned Paper, No Watermark, Perf 13 Rough
2d. blue block of eight (2x4), the centre block of four imperforate between horizontally (i.e. two pairs), unused with large part original gum with the errors being unmounted, the odd minor tone spot not affecting the errors. The premier mint error of the Queensland Chalons. S.G. 24c, £11,000. Photo
Note: A used pair of this error was first reported in the "Stanley Gibbons Monthly Journal" in September 1895 and listed by Stanley Gibbons in 1917. In 1925 the spectacular "Mayfair Find" was auctioned by Harmers of London which featured a mint block of one hundred and six with one row of twelve imperforate horizontally between. The block was subsequently broken down to eight pieces with two pairs in a mint block of six in the Royal Collection. Of the remaining ten pairs available to collectors, three are faulty, leaving seven fine examples. The largest known multiple of this error are the two pairs contained in this block of eight. Another poorly centred block of eight is recorded, however, it has not been seen since the Ernest Collins sale in 1928.
