1898 (21 June) ALS over four sides written from Sirdarieh, Cairo to Major General Maurice making comments on the press, recommending Frank Rhodes for the Standard, should the Times not keep him on and complaining further that he wishes that "they would keep stupid notices about the advance out of the press like Reuter's last communique. They may bring about the worst possible end to the campaign. I mean the Khalifa bolting before we arrive. I fancy however he will stand, of course it is quite impossible to be sure & there is no good flaunting our numbers in his face". Signed "Herbert Kitchener". Together with undated autograph note to "Boyle" arranging to meet Lord Cromer, signed "Herbert Kitchener.
