King George III
1809 (8 Sept.) warrant addressed to Lord Eldon as Lord Chancellor, requiring him to issue a warrant by the Great Seal appointing Viscount Stangford Ambassador to the Portuguese Court in exile in Brazil. Signed at top "George R" with his 'mad' signature and by George Canning as Foreign Secretary. Document bound together over four sheets with copy of the Portuguese translation.

Viscount Strangford had previously been Ambassador at Lisbon and was instrumental in persuading the Portuguese Court to evacuate to Brazil under threat of Napoleon's forces.
