Horatio Nelson
1805 (16 Jan.) ALS in left hand from the Victory likely to Colonel Lean over two pages signed "Nelson & Bronte". Nelson thanks Lean for the hospitality given to Captain Keats by Lean's secretary Mr. Montford writing "your house Sir was I understand the only one open to our Gentlemen whilst the business (?) with the Dey was in suspense" mentioning also that "Your Secretary told Captain Keats that He was perfectly sure that His Conduct would meet with your approbation and I shall not fail of making such liberal conduct known to His Majesty's Ministers in my first dispatches". Document with filing endorsement on reverse with remainder from contemporary mounting.
Captain Keats had been sent to negotiate with the Dey of Algiers who had dismissed the British vice-consul.
