Edward VII (1901-10), Crown, 1902, a uniface trial [?] striking of the obverse die in brass-gilt copper alloy on a 4.5mm. thick planchet, 41.37g (cf. ESC 3560 [361]; cf. S.3979), two or three minor spots of stain, and a hint of rub to hair, otherwise extremely fine, and highly unusual

Brown lists several uniface obverse strikings for the reign of Edward VII all attributed to G W de Saulles, now housed in the Royal Mint Museum collection (BHM 3989-92). These mysterious pieces range in size from 41mm. to 67mm. and would all appear to be preparatory works for official Medals that were discontinued. Whilst this striking has evidently been made with the official dies sanctioned for the King's coinage, clearly the engraver had a habit of experimenting with designs before settling on a finished product.
