Genera Service 1918-62, 1 clasp, Malaya (Plt. Off. J. L. Gregory. R.A.F.), mounted as worn, good very fine
John Lewarne Gregory was born on 7 June 1927 at Saltash, Cornwall and was educated at Saltash County School, 1939-41 and Okehampton Grammar, 1941-45. Gregory was a photographer for General Aircraft Ltd and Westland Aircraft Ltd upon his enlistment in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve (No. 3045087) on 20 August 1945. Appointed to a commission in September 1951, he completed training in Rhodesia and at No. 5 and 201 Flying Schools, before further training at Alvaston and Nuneham Park to specialise in photographic interpretaton and intelligence. He served at RAF Seletar from 15 July 1953-1 January 1955 in Photographic Intelligence, being promoted Flying Officer on 1 December 1958 and Flight Lieutenant on 21 October 1959. Remaining in photographic intelligence during this pivotal period of the Cold War, it is without doubt his experience and skill would have been in regular use. He again served at HQ Far East Air Force from 1966-70 with the Intelligence 4 (Photo Int) Unit. Gregory was transferred to Photographic Interpretation in 1971 and was advanced Squadron Leader in November 197, serving with No. 39 Squadron at Wyton. He was placed on the Retired List on 19 December 1981 and died at The White House, Chesham Road, Amersham on 8 July 2004, his home address being Woodriffe, Beaconsfield; sold together with copied complete Service Record.
