James Charleston was born at Dunnet, Thurso in 1829 and enlisted in the Scots Guards at Kirkwall on 12 May 1847, a mason upon his enlistment. Promoted Corporal in December 1850, he embarked for the Crimea with the 1st Battalion in February 1854, being promoted Sergeant in May that same year. Having suffered a contusion of the arm at the Alma, he subsequently served at Balaklava, Inkermann and Sebastopol before being admitted to Scutari. He died there on 6 February 1855; sold together with a letter from Major Grant, Scots Guards, who confirmed the above details in 1983.
