Naval General Service 1793-1840, 1 clasp, Gut of Gibraltar 12 July 1809 (James Giffard, Chaplain.), good very fine
James Giffard confirmed as Chaplain aboard Spencer during the action on 12 July 1809. He was the son of William Giffard, of Guy Hall, Cambridge and educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge. Having been appointed Curate of Whaplode, Lincolnshire and Waterbeach, Cambridge, he took up appointment as a Naval Chaplain, serving aboard Spencer from 10 November 1800-6 June 1803. Latterly Curate at West Meon, Hampshire and Wrawby, he was thence Vicar of Wootton, 1814-49 and Cabourn, 1821-49. Having married in 1808, Giffard died on 18 August 1849 at Wootton; sold with copied Muster Rolls and biography.
