Silver prize, in the form of 93mm silver ash tray, by Hung Chong, with Shanghai Light Horse Badge applied to the centre and engraved 'Shanghai Light Horse. Monthly shoot October 1941 won by 2/Lt. J. K. Brand', generally good condition
John Kenneth Brand was born at Shanghai on 5 December 1889 and was listed as on the Staff of Probst, Hanbury & Co, Nanking Road in 1912 (Directory & Chronicle of China, refers). Commissioned into the Devonshire Regiment during the Great War, he served attached to the West Africa Regiment in the Cameroons (1914-15 Star Trio). Returned to China in 1919, he was married at the Holy Trinity Cathedral, Shanghai in 1920 and rejoined his previous employers. An exchange broker by 1925, Brand was once again commissioned, this time to the Indian Army, in late 1942. Little more is known of his service, although a Special Operations Executive Personnel File (TNA HS 9/200/8, refers) exists for him. Having re-married in 1946, Brand returned to London and lived at 11a Gordon Place and died on 2 November 1963; sold with copied research and a photograph which shows him as jockey of 'Kalfalla' at the 1928 Shanghai races.
