Royal Navy and Army Boxing Association Medal, bronze, the reverse engraved 'Eastern Command Championship 1912. Men's Heavy Weight. Corporal G. Coombes 9th Lancers', traces of verdigris, nearly very fine

[D.C.M.] London Gazette 15 March 1916:

'When in charge of a working party behind the bombers after the explosion of a mine he displayed the greatest courage and resource, and volunteered for and carried out every dangerous task during 48 hours under very heavy fire.'

G. Coombes earned one of just fifteen D.C.M.'s won by the 9th Lancers during the Great War and was also 'mentioned' (London Gazette 15 March 1916, refers). He was latterly commissioned into the Royal Irish Fusiliers.
