Ellis Roy Bird was born at Albany, Western Australia in 1893 before moving to Bunbury. He was a fitter on the Western Australian Railways upon his enlistment on 21 December 1916, joining the original Railway Unit, No. 3 Section, embarking with them on 29 January 1917. Having seen a broad period of service, his final unit was the 5th Broad Gauge Railway Operating Company. Bird was returned to Australia in June 1919 and he was discharged on 9 February 1920. He died at Bassendean on 22 February 1970; sold together with his Returned from Active Service Badge, Returned Sailors & Soldiers Badge, two Badges, copied Service Record and a number of military and civil photographs including the recipient.
