George Henry Ross served with the Royal Navy from 1902 when, in December of that year he was served aboard the last Royal Sovereign class battleship Hood. Over the next several years he switched vessels regularly working aboard cruisers such as Kent and smaller destroyers such as Zebra. His location on the outbreak of the First World War is unclear however by July 1917 he appears aboard the cruiser Terrible which had returned the year before from the Dardanelles. By October he moved again to the minesweeper Lilac before heading to the reserve cruiser Sappho and ending the war aboard the supply ship Zaria.
