Frank Tarr was born on 16 June 1873 at Cardiff, Wales and served with the 1st Battalion, Devonshrie Regiment on the Punjab Frontier and in the Boer War, being issued the rare 'Defence of Mafeking' clasp on 9 December 1903. Having emigrated to Canada to take up work as a miner, Tarr was also a member of the 6th (Duke of Connaught's Own Rifles) Militia. He re-enlisted for service whilst living at 2104, 10th Avenue East, Vancouver and served in France with the 9th Canadian Railway Troops from 16 April 1916. Suffering multiple bouts of rheumatism and then flu, he was discharged on 7 July 1918; his full Canadian Service Record (60 pages) is available via:
