Thomas Maitland Moore joined the 61st (South Gloucestershire) Regiment of Foot as an Ensign on 10 August 1847, having already served at that rank with the 57th (West Middlesex) Regiment. He served with the regiment during the Second Sikh War, and was present at the decisive Battle of Goojerat on 21 February 1849, advancing to Lieutenant on 5 June that year. The 61st played a prominent role in the Indian Mutiny, Moore sustaining a 'slight wound in the shoulder' at the Siege of Delhi on 14 September 1857. On that day the final assault on the city took place. The 61st were part of Brigadier Longfield's 5th Column. A brass gong taken from Delhi by the regiment is now in the National Army Museum (NAM. 1965-10-153-1). Moore was promoted to Captain on 2 October 1857. The 61st finally returned to England, via Mauritius, in 1860. Moore retired on 11 July 1865.
