William Rodden/Roddan is first listed on the Muster Rolls (No. 550) of the 40th Regiment in July 1842. Promoted Corporal on 4 October 1843, he was killed in action at Maharajpoor on 29 December 1843. Following reconnaissance, Major-General Sir Hugh Gough decided on an attack against the Mahrattas and gave the order for battle. With a force of around 6,000 men the 40th were in the Central Column under the appropriately-named Major-General Valiant, in thick fighting with the Mahratta gunners:
Valiant had to carry three entrenched positions one after another; and two successive Commanding Officers of the 40th fell wounded before the very muzzles of the guns before the Batteries were captured.'
Rodden was one of 28 men of his unit killed in action that day.
