Meritorious Service Medal, G.V.R., with M.I.D. oak leaves (1025 Fl; Sjt: A. Hawley. R.F.C.), good very fine

Thomas Alex Gordon Hawley has a good career biography which was published in A Contemptible Little Flying Corps:
'A recruit, a direct entrant into RFC 9 January 1914. As 2AM in the Aircraft Park served in France from 16 August 1914. Mentioned in despatches as Corporal 1 January 1916. Awarded Army MSM as Flight Sergeant in London Gazette 11 November 1916. Commissioned 12 October 1916. Promoted Lieutenant 17 August 1917. Again mentioned in despatches in January 1919. Promoted Flight Lieutenant 30 June 1922, and was then Supplies Officer at RAF HQ Iraq. Retired 5 April 1930. Still shown in 1938 Air Force List. His M.S.M. only was sold by Capital Medals in 1988.'
