A Victorian M.S.M. awarded to Sergeant J. Goggins, Dublin Recruiting District, late 88th Foot (Connaught Rangers), who was awarded a French Legion of Honour for his service in the Crimea

Meritorious Service Medal, V.R. (Sergt. J. Goggins. Dublin Recruitg. District), contact wear to rim in places, very fine

M.S.M. received 7 May 1884, with Annuity of £10. Recorded as 'Coggins' by McInnes, which noted this Medal last sold as a single in 1997.

James Goggins served with distinction in the Crimea with the Connaught Rangers and was slightly wounded on 28 October. He was awarded one of eight Legion of Honours conferred by the French which went to the Regiment and his service was further enhanced by the following summary in The Crimean Campaign with "The Connaught Rangers" 1854-55-56 by General Sir Horatio Shirley:

'Sergeant James Goggins served throughout the campaign, and was conspicuous [in] his gallantry on several occasions, as well as for the coolness and judgment which (he) invariably displayed in the discharge of his duties during the siege. He is now Staff Sergeant on the recruiting service in Ireland.'

Goggins died on 22 April 1901; with thanks to Paul Wallace in assisting in the research of this Lot.
