A Great War D.C.M. awarded to Lance-Sergeant H. Lightowler, Northumberland Fusiliers
Distinguished Conduct Medal, G.V.R. (6419 L. Sjt: H. Lightowler. 11/Nth'd: Fus:), extremely fine
D.C.M. London Gazette 19 November 1917. The citation, published on 6 February 1918 states:
'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in an attack. When all the N.C.O.'s had become casualties he did valuable work in collecting the men of his Company and assisting to organise the attack. He took six prisoners single-handed. As a Platoon Commander he displayed great coolness an determination, and was directly responsible for much of the success of the attack.'
Harry Lightowler, a native of Bradford, served in France with the 11th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers from 25 August 1915 and was discharged with a Silver War Badge to go with his DCM and 1915 Star Trio.
