William John Morrow, a native of Newcastle, was born on 27 July 1899. A pre-war regular, Morrow was serving as a Temporary Warrant Officer 1st Class with the Indian Army Corps of Clerks when awarded his M.B.E. Morrow was serving as a Conductor with the Headquarters of the 2nd Echelon when taken prisoner of war by the Japanese at the fall of Singapore on 15 February 1942, being held at Changi, and released from captivity on 2 September 1945.
