Alexander Macrae was born on 13 August 1884 at Back, Isle of Lewis and first went to sea in 1902. He had been sailing as Chief Officer in the service of the Federal Company for over three years when war broke out. Commissioned in the Royal Naval Reserve in November, joined Coquette as First Lieutenant in December 1914. On 7 March 1916, the Coquette was blown up, the Captain and 22 men being lost. Macrae assumed command of TB112 in April 1916 and rendered valuable services in preventing submarine attacks on a convoy, for which he received a letter from the Admiralty expressing their appreciation of his action. Assuming command of the Osprey on 29 May, he won his first D.S.C. for an action on 24 September for the destruction of an enemy submarine. His Bar came for a similar action the next month; sold together with buttons and cloth insignia.
