Julian Ashley Sheppard enlisted in the Royal Air Force on 4 August 1987 and served a total of 23 years. Upon his discharge on 1 August 2010, he was provided the following glowing Testimonial:
'Following basic training, Sergeant Sheppard was posted to RAF Coltishall where he was employed on Basic Police Duties and from where he was selected for specialist posts in the United Kingdom and Germany before moving to high profile duties on the Royal and VVIP Security Flight at RAF Northolt in 1999. He later specialised in the fields of Counter Intelligence and Computer Security in 2001.
Sheppard was promoted to his present Senior NCO rank in May 2005 whilst serving with the RAF Provost and Security Services in Germany and on returning to the UK was appointed as the Counter Intelligence Specialsit at RAF Honington.
In April 2007, he was successful in his application to join the RAF Special Investigations Branch Computer Forensics department and quickly established himself as a highly respected and knowledgeable digital evidence analyst. His expertise in this highly specialised area of forensics was formally recognised in his selection as the first member of the department to achieve certification through the Guidance Software EnCase Certified Examiner program, which he completed in 2009.'
Having served in the air operations over Iraq in 1998, his first flight with the Royal and VVIP Flight was on 6 September 1999. Before the year was out they had flown the Prince of Wales four times, besides Geoff Hoon, Prime Minister Tony Blair (6 December) and Princess Alexandra (8 December). Flying FIFA Executives including Sir Bobby Charlton in May 2000 and a visit to the Balkans from 23-28 July. They also flew Prince Charles on his Royal Tour of the Czech Republic an Slovakia in October. The Log Book is a roll call of the Royal Family and political figures of the period, with Her Majesty The Queen being flown to Guernsey and Jersey on 12 July 2003. His final flight was on 1-3 July 2003, for Jack Straw's Tour of Kuwait and Iraq, Sheppard totalling some 671hrs 40mins with the flight.
Sheppard was also commended by Squadron Leader L. B. Brunt for using his forensic skills in recovering his stolen caravan from RAF Bruggen in the summer of 2004 and was tasked with providing security for the RAF Alpine Ski Team at the Ski & Snowboard Championships; sold together with his original Air Crew Flying Log Book (RAF Form 1767), with full entries of his time on the Royal and VVIP Security Flight, named lid of issued for the OSM, besides a plethora of copied service records, reports, certificates and other material.
