William John Spence was born on 20 April 1962 and enlisted in the Uster Defence Regiment on 24 July 1980. Upon his release on 21 February 1992, he was given the following Testimonial:

'Corporal Spence was a member of the 3rd Ulster Defence Regiment for 5 years. During his service he acted as a commander and as a training instructor. He performed his duties well and in a trustworthy manner. He is a capable supervisor.'

Having left the Ulster Defence Regiment, the photographic archive suggests he took up security work in the Middle East; sold together with 3rd Battalion, UDR presentation of Colours medal, 1991, reverse engraved 'Cpl W J Spence', copied Certificate of Service and photographs.
