A most interesting series of three complete black-and-white photograph albums relating to the life of Major-General R. .K. 'Rex' Hewer C.B., C.B.E., M.C.
Comprising two large-format and one small, including five original notes and letters relating directly to the Dunkirk Evacuation; several original photographs of Hewer in uniform during both World Wars and many images relating to his obvious passion for horse racing, fox-hunting, Point-to-Point races and other country pursuits in the pre-Great War and inter-War eras. Also numerous leaflets, pamphlets, newspaper cuttings and letters stuck-down, generally very fine (Lot)
Reginald Kingcote 'Rex' Hewer was educated at Bloxham School and after service in the School OTC was commissioned into the Royal Field Artillery in October 1914. Winning a well-deserved Military Cross in December 1917, during the inter-War years he remained in the British Army and served variously with the 7th Dragoon Guards, 7th Queen's Own Hussars and Royal Armoured Corps.
The outbreak of the Second World War found Hewer serving at the War Office as Deputy Assistant Quartermaster-General; he was in France with the British Expeditionary Force as Assistant Quartermaster-General of Movements and after the Evacuation was awarded an O.B.E. for his good work in planning and assisting in the Evacuation. There followed appointments to the Middle East Command as Assistant Adjutant & Quartermaster-General, promotion to Acting Major-General and further awards including a C.B.E. and a pair of 'Mentions'. Hewer retired in May 1948, was granted the honorary rank of Major-General, and died in November 1970.
