Sold together with a copied certificate for the ISAF Medal and character statement from Corporal Doug Brady, 11 Platoon, 'C' Company, 2nd Battalion, The Rifles:
'Unfortunately Rfn Monaghan's rapidly prospering career was cut short during the Battalion's recent deployment to Sangin Helmand Province. The Company was deployed to arguably the most dangerous Forward Operating Base in Afghanistan (FOB Wishtan) where IED attacks and firefights were hourly rather than daily occurences always outnumbered climbing walls 17ft high, every 20m, working within a minefield and often ambushed at less than 30m fighting on less than an hours sleep often without food takes a special kind of soldier to stay focussed.
At just eighteen, Rfn Monaghan showed courage, discipline, physical and mental endurance far beyond his years. Used as the point man in my patrol he was often first to face the enemy or the bomb. He was never afraid to shy away from combat, he is the kind of man you have to hold back rather than push on, however, on the 10th of July 2009 Rfn Monaghan was part of a fighting patrol that was hit by an IED. 5 out of 15 men lost their lives and 6 were severely injured Rfn Monaghan showed no delay despite suffering severe blast wounds and show, treating and evacuating the injured, even though still under enemy fire. The maturity, courage and sheer bravery he displayed are beyond words. There is not a man in the Battalion who would not want him by their side in Battle. Unfortunately due to injuries sustained that day and in the weeks following Rfn Monaghan can no longer deploy to the front line.
In a nutshell he is a gritty Infantryman, a gentleman and a true Chosen Man. It has been an honour to work with him. He is a trustworthy, loyal, polite, intelligent, hard working man who will excel in whichever career path he chooses. He will be hugely missed within the Battalion and the Rifles as a whole have lost an asset. I wish him all the best in the future. Swift and Bold.'
For his part on that day, Serjeant Jaime Moncho was awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross.
