Gavin Keith Winter was born in May 1978 and enlisted in the Army in March 1995, enlisting in the Welsh Guards and seeing his first tour of Northern Ireland in 1997. A founding member of 6 (Guards) Platoon, this unique part of 'B' Company, 3rd Battalion, Parachute Regiment. The Guards Parachute Platoon is made up of volunteers who have passed P Company from the five Regiments of Foot Guards and Infantry-qualified members of the Household Cavalry; they can be distinguished from other paratroopers by a "blue red blue" patch sewn to their beret beneath the Parachute Regiment cap badge.
Winter served with the Platoon during the invasion of Iraq and then fully transferred to the Parachute Regiment. Having completed a tour of Afghanistan in 2006, he served with the 2nd Battalion in Helmand in 2007, when an image of him breaking into a compound during a patrol in the region of Forward Operating Base Inkerman.
Having served as a Section Commander at the Army Foundation College from February 2007-January 2008 - during which his experiences 'on Airborne tactics during a recent Battlefield tour' were much appreciated by his Junior Soldiers - Winter was recommeded for service with the Special Forces. He transferred to the 1st Battalion and is understood to have joined the Special Forces Support Group soonafter. Winter was discharged in January 2011; sold together with copied Certificate of Service, original Staff Report covering 1 Feb 2007-31 Jan 2008, besides a plethora of photographs of the recipient and his time on active service, including a number of battlefield shots.
