Royal Humane Society, small bronze medal (unsuccessful) (William Fricker, 12th July 1897), complete with bronze ribbon buckle, very fine

R.H.S. Case No. 28,938:

'On 12 July 1897, William Fricker was bathing in the lake at Eastnor Castle in Herefordshire. A youth named Albert Cook, aged 17, of no occupation, whose address was 49 Tufton Street, Westminster, was in a punt with some companions fishing in the lake. Although they had been told not to bathe, as they saw Fricker in the water, they also went in. Cook got into the weeds, 12 to 15 feet deep and 12 yards from the bank. Fricker went to his rescue, but Cook seized him and they went down together. Fricker, becoming exhausted, let go his hold, and was only rescued himself in a very exhausted state. Cook was drowned.'
