Four: Sergeant F. Berry, 9th Royal Tank Regiment

1939-45 Star; France and Germany Star; Defence and War Medals 1939-45, with M.I.D. oak leaf, unnamed as issued, nearly extremely fine (4)

F. Berry was Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazette 10 May 1945, refers), whilst serving as a Sergeant (No. 7925987) in the 9th Royal Tank Regiment; sold with a French 3rd Grenadier Division metal sleeve badge and Association membership card and booklet, both named to '102 Sgt. Berry', a photograph of British tanks with a crew standing in front, an R.T.R. handkerchief and Second Army Thanksgiving Service booklet.

Interestingly, the 9th Battalion of the Tank Corps won the right to wear the badge of the 3rd Grenadier Division of the French Army for supporting them at the Battle of Moreuil in the summer of 1918. It was worn on the upper-left sleeve by all ranks. This tradition was maintained when the 9th R.T.R. was formed in May 1940, and was greatly prized, being unique to the British army. Loosely translated, its motto reads: 'He who touches me, gets burned.'
