Herbert Edward Ellis was born on 18 September 1908 at Fulham, the son of Valentine Edward Ellis and husband to Marjorie Edith Ellis, of 31 Oxberry Avenue, Fulham, London. A clerk by profession, he enlisted at Ossett for the Royal Corps of Signals on 12 August 1941 and completed a Junior N.C.O.'s course on 5 May 1942. Posted to North West Europe, he was Mentioned in Despatches as a Temporary Captain (London Gazette 2 August 1945, refers), and later enjoyed a further decade in the service of the London District Signal Regiment, taking retirement in April 1956. Appointed guest of honour at a formal dinner held at Pirbright Camp in Surrey on 10 May 1956, he was presented with a small gift by his fellow officers, a letter accompanying the lot noting:
'It is fair to warn you that the officers of the Regt have subscribed towards a presentation to yourself in recognition of what you have done for the Regt and in regret at the parting… We all realise that your work must have denied your company to your wife and, if you wish it, would like to make a small gift to her, in recognition of the fact.'
Ellis died at Kingston-upon-Thames in October 1983; sold with original Soldier's Service Pay Book, original framed M.I.D. Certificate, card dog tag named to '2372930 CE Ellis H E', an illuminated presentation book named to the recipient bearing the signatures of fellow officers, a card and letter to 'Guest Night' on his retirement, with corresponding 'pips', shoulder titles and fabric Royal Signal badges.
