Six: Private C. W. Tinkler, Sherwood Foresters, wounded in action on 28 February 1944 following the Anzio landings

C. W. Tinkler served throughout the Second World War with the 2nd Battalion, Sherwood Foresters, part of the 1st Infantry Division. Sent to France in September 1939, the Battalion took part in the short but bitter fighting in the Low Countries and were evacuated from Dunkirk. Sent to North Africa in early 1943 as part of the British First Army, it is likely that Tinkler witnessed the final stages of the Tunisian Campaign and the extremely heavy casualties suffered at Anzio. Transferred to Palestine in January 1945, he was award the GSM for operations against the Irgun and Lehi; sold with copied roll entry confirming service from June 1945-August 1946 with the 2nd Battalion, Sherwood Foresters.
