Thomas William Jones was born on 23 May 1908 and lived at 11 Hadfield Road, Basingstoke, Hampshire. A bricklayer's labourer by trade, he attested for the Royal Fusiliers on 31 March 1940 and served in Iraq, North Africa and Italy. Taken prisoner at Anzio on 22 September 1943, he was incarcerated at Stalag 357, being released on 10 May 1945 and discharged from the Royal Fusiliers in the rank of Lance-Sergeant at Warwick on 2 September 1947, his conduct noted as 'exemplary'.
Joining the Hertfordshire Regiment (T.A.), Jones was promoted Colour-Sergeant and spent the early 1950s leading C.C.F. Camps at Bulford Fields Camp. He was also placed in charge of the maintenance of the anti-tank guns of the 1st Battalion, Herefordshire Regiment (T.A.), being singled out by Lieutenant-Colonel R. A. Hibbert, Commanding, for a particularly favourable gun inspection on 11 October 1955. Remaining with the Territorials, Jones re-enlisted as a T.A. Volunteer on 2 July 1958, being recognised in November 1964 by the C.O. of the 1st Battalion, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment, for exceptional service:
'Sergeant Jones is in charge of M.T. administration. The high state of vehicle maintenance and the smooth efficiency with which that Department has been run is due primarily to his efforts. In this, and in other spheres, he has rendered truly outstanding service to this Battalion since he first enlisted. He sets himself an extremely high standard of efficiency. His obedience to orders and his willingness to undertake any duty, whenever called upon, is a splendid example to All Ranks of the T.A. and Permanent Staff.'
