A poignant group of five awarded to Lance Corporal G. C. Hicks, 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters), Royal Armoured Corps, who died on 1 April 1945 amidst some of the most brutal and fanatical resistance of the whole war

1939-45 Star; Africa Star; Italy Star; France and Germany Star; War Medal 1939-45, unnamed as issued, with O.H.M.S. box of issue named to 'Mrs. P. M. Hicks, 32, York Road, Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk', and medal award slip named to '5889485 L/Cpl. Hicks, G.C.', good very fine (5)

George Charles Hicks died in the aftermath of Operation Veritable and Operation Blockbuster, as the Anglo-Canadian northern pincer movement under Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery successfully advanced through the Reichswald Forest and attempted to root out fanatical German resistance in the Hochwald Forest and on towards Wesel. Aged 31 years, he is buried in the Reichswald Forest War Cemetery. The son of Frank Charles and Annie Maria Hicks of Bury St. Edmund's, Suffolk, and husband of Phyllis Mary Hicks of Bury St. Edmunds, his gravestone bears the inscription: 'Loved and Remembered Always. Mum, Dad and Wife.'
