Alfred Whiteside was born in 1903 and enlisted at Warley for the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment on 15 August 1921. Posted to India, Iraq, Egypt and Palestine, he transferred to the Suffolk Regiment on 22 August 1941 and spent 307 days in North Africa from 12 September 1943. Transferred to Gibraltar for a year, he finally returned home on 25 July 1945.
Sold with Regular Army Certificate of Service which confirms entitlement and notes his conduct upon leaving the Colours in February 1953 as 'very good', adding:
'A good type of N.C.O. who has given excellent service during his army career. He is thoroughly honest, reliable and trustworthy and of sober habits. He is industrious and hardworking and has displayed aptitude in the control of men. He can be recommended with confidence for a position of trust.'
