Ernest William Hardy was born around 1895 at Brentford, the son of George Hardy, a wharf foreman of 24 Loring Road, Isleworth, Middlesex. A labourer at Percy's soap factory, Hardy attested at Hounslow for the Middlesex Regiment in July 1911 and was present with the 8th Battalion at training camps in 1912 and 1913. Embodied on 5 August 1914, he appears to have served at home until 1916, witnessing later service overseas with the 1/8th Battalion. Transferred to the 7th (Reserve) Battalion on 18 February 1918, he was demobilised on 31 March 1920 after 8 years and 265 days' service; sold with copied MIC and service record, noting pair as full entitlement.
